Stem cells

Ethical: Science vs. Religion

Catholics are against human embryonic stem cells because they believe it is immoral. They believe human embryonic stem cells are considered a type of murder. Some of these cells come from miscarriages that involve no deliberate interruption of pregnancy. They disapprove of embryonic stem cells, embryonic germ cells, umbilical cord stem cells. (Citation-11)

Scientist believe human embryonic stem cells is a solution to human suffering. Human embryos are donated and never taken from the uterus. Human embryonic cells has an attribute of pluripotency, which allow them to issue any type of cell except the placenta. Some cells in a developed human may have multipotency, which allow them to issue more than one cell type. Cells in the developed human, so far, are not pluripotent. (Citation-12)

LEGAL: George vs. Obama

When George W. Bush was in office,2001, he restricted embryonic stem cells. He believed that embryonic stem cells were immoral to human life. He had millions of religious supporters. Even though, Bush made it illegal to practice embryonic stem cells, he only authorized 21 lines to do research on embryonic stem cells. Bush and his supporters were against abortions and his goal was to prevent the tax payers dollars to end up going into funding scientist to destroy embryos. (Citation-13)

President Obama just recently lifted Bush's restriction on embryonic stem cell research. Obama's plan to loosen the restriction was difficult because of ethical issues. People still didn't like the fact that scientist were destroying embryos for their stem cells. Some scientist believed Obama's plan was more of a burden than a boon to their work. Obama finally lifted the restriction, but everyone was wanting to know, who were going to be the selected companies to be funded? The Nation Institutes of Health (NIH) were in charge of deciding which companies to fund. The NIH wrote down a criteria that the companies had to qualify to be funded. Only 2 of the original "Bush" lines were funded the other 18 weren't. (Citation-14)
